Vets link up with international dog health and welfare platform
Brussels, May 2018 – The Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) has become collaborating partner of the International Partnership for Dogs (IPFD), whose mission is to ‘facilitate collaboration and sharing of resources to enhance the health, well-being and welfare of pedigreed dogs and all dogs worldwide.’ IPFD partners include numerous national kennel clubs, industry and non-profit organizations.
Monique Megens DVM, past president of FECAVA commented: ‘FECAVA is very proud to be the first veterinary association to join IPFD as a collaborating partner. This partnership will allow us to communicate better with other stakeholders of this broad platform with an interest in dog health and welfare, and to share our expertise and news on projects, educational events and other relevant initiatives with other IPFD stakeholders. After all, the most challenging issues facing pet health require international multi-stakeholder cooperation.’
Brenda Bonnett DVM PhD, chief executive officer of the IPFD, added: ‘Canine health is a complex interplay between genetics – including breeding practices – environmental factors and human-animal interactions. We are happy to welcome FECAVA as a collaborating partner of IPFD, as both of our organisations share the common goal of optimal health and welfare of dogs, supporting the dog world with information and other resources. This is clearly a win-win situation.’
FECAVA is the platform for the promotion of the professional development and representation of companion animal veterinarians in Europe. Founded in 1990, it currently has 40 national member associations and 13 associate member associations, and represents over 25,000 companion animal practitioners throughout Europe.
The canine non-profit organisation IPFD has an internet platform, DogWellNet.com, which functions as the information hub, providing links and additional resources to breeders and others in the dog world. An example is the Harmonization of Genetic Testing for Dogs, aiming to improve standardisation of and access to robust genetic testing.
