The 5th meeting of the EU Platform on Animal Welfare

The 5thmeeting of the Animal Welfare Platform took place on June 18 in Brussels. It was the penultimate one for the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, who announced the extension of the Platform until June 2021. He advised that the animal welfare should be kept high on the next Commission’s agenda. The Platform was inaugurated in 2017 and collaborates with the Commission on the development and exchange of coordinated actions on animal welfare.

The presentation of the results of the Commission Control Plan for the official controls on online sales of dogs and cats was among the topics on companion animals. Examination of adverts for pets on sale in 18 countries showed many irregularities. Over 60% of inspected adverts don’t give vaccine records and 80% don’t provide the animal’s ID. Also presented were the latest updates from the Voluntary Initiative Group on improving the “Health and welfare of pets (dogs) in trade” and the Spanish governmental campaign on Companion Animal Responsible Ownership, “Eres responsable”.
