Morbidity and Mortality of Domestic Rabbits

Pet rabbits are one of the most popular mammalian pets. But despite its domestication and great conformational variation, they appear to retain a large proportion of the behaviour patterns similar to the European wild rabbit, which is important to consider to adequately meet their needs.

A study about Morbidity and mortality of domestic rabbits in the UK is aimed to characterise common disorders of pet rabbits and reasons for their mortality. It can assist veterinarians to better advise owners on optimal animal husbandry priorities to improve their welfare.

UK veterinarians are stating in their #ItTakesTwo campaign, that companionship in pet rabbits is key to their welfare. On January 15, a joint position was published by the British Veterinary Association (BVA), British Veterinary Zoological Society (BVZS) and British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), to expose the importance of housing rabbits in compatible pairs or groups for the benefits of their physical and mental health.
