The Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) has now a smartphone application for quick and easy real-time acute pain assessment of cats by cat carers and veterinary health professionals. Developed by the Steagall Laboratory at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Université de Montréal, the FGS phone App promotes pain awareness in cats and teaches users to use the tool through a “practice your skills” tutorial. The application also allows real-time pain scoring of the cat with further clinical recommendations (“Is your cat painful?”). Finally, cat carers can take a picture of their cat’s face and share it with their veterinarians, if the pain is suspected. “We are excited that we have now a reliable tool that can be used in the home environment for acute pain assessment in cats,” says Dr. Paulo Steagall, professor of veterinary anesthesia and pain management of the Université de Montréal.
The FGS smartphone application was possible due to an unrestricted grant from Zoetis. It is available for Android and Apple platforms in English, French, and Spanish.
