Stephan Neumann, FECAVA Board member releases Comprehensive New Book on Small Animal Pathophysiology
The Veterinary community is excited about the release of the Textbook of Small Animal Pathophysiology, an authoritative new book by esteemed veterinary specialist Prof. Dr. Stephan Neumann. This comprehensive guide delves into the mechanisms of disease in small animals, offering invaluable insights into diagnosis and management. The book covers a broad range of topics, from metabolic and infectious diseases to complex systemic disorders, each with detailed pathophysiological explanations. It aims to bridge the gap between clinical presentations and underlying biological processes, making it an essential resource for veterinary practitioners, students, and researchers.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Stephan Neumann to discuss the making of this influential book and his journey in bringing it to life.
Interview with Dr. Stephan Neumann
FECAVA: Congratulations on the release of the Textbook of Small Animal Pathophysiology! Can you tell us about your motivation for writing this book?
Dr. Neumann: Thank you! I wanted to create a resource that would not only be a reference but also deepen understanding. Pathophysiology is fundamental to veterinary medicine, yet we often focus on treatment without fully exploring the “why” behind a disease. This book is my way of encouraging veterinarians to look beyond symptoms and develop a more nuanced understanding of disease mechanisms, which can ultimately improve patient care.
FECAVA: Writing a comprehensive book like this is no small feat. How long has it taken from the initial concept to publication?
Dr. Neumann: It has been a long journey—nearly four years in total. Initially, I began compiling notes and outlining chapters, but as you can imagine, covering such a vast field requires extensive research and careful attention to detail. Balancing my clinical practice, teaching responsibilities, and writing was challenging, but seeing the book come to life has been incredibly rewarding.
FECAVA: What were some of the main challenges you faced while writing?
Dr. Neumann: The sheer volume of information was one of the biggest challenges. I wanted to ensure accuracy and depth while keeping the content accessible. Another challenge was staying up-to-date; veterinary science advances quickly, so there was always new research to consider. It required a lot of revision and adapting, which is partly why the process took several years.
FECAVA: Now that the book is out, how do you feel about the final product?
Dr. Neumann: I’m thrilled and a bit relieved! It’s incredibly rewarding to see it finally in print, and I hope it will be a valuable tool for the veterinary community. Writing this book took years of commitment, but if it helps veterinarians better understand and manage diseases in their patients, then every effort was worthwhile.
FECAVA: Thank you, Dr. Neumann, and congratulations again on this significant contribution to veterinary literature.
Dr. Stephan Neumann’s “Textbook of Small Animal Pathophysiology” is published by Wiley Blackwell and is now available and promises to be a pivotal reference for small animal practitioners and students dedicated to advancing their knowledge in veterinary medicine.
