On 17 June 2026, the FECAVA Sustainability Working Group hosted the Online Congress on Sustainability in Veterinary Medicine, bringing together veterinary professionals from across Europe and beyond to exchange knowledge and explore practical approaches for a more sustainable future in the profession.

The free online congress addressed sustainability from multiple perspectives, including daily veterinary practice, specialised fields, laboratory settings, and veterinary management. The programme was moderated by Stephan Neumann and featured contributions from international experts sharing experiences, challenges, and solutions that can support more sustainable decision-making in veterinary work.

The session “Sustainability in Daily Veterinary Practice” included presentations from Kyra de Keyzer (Netherlands) on “The journey to a green veterinary practice” and Camilla Sherwin (UK) on supporting sustainability improvements in veterinary practices.

The session “Special Fields of Sustainability”, moderated by Julija Abram, explored sustainability initiatives in different areas of veterinary medicine, including Catriona Curtis (UK) on “Greening your theatre: Experience with sustainability in multinational companies” and Katarina Novakovic (Serbia) on sustainability in veterinary laboratories. Additional presentations covered topics such as recycling disposable syringes, preventing environmental contamination, sustainable parasite control, and sustainability as a core value in veterinary management.

The congress concluded with presentations from groups actively working in the field of sustainability, including Vets for Life and BVVD, highlighting the importance of collaboration and shared action across the veterinary community.
