Protecting the welfare of traded dogs in Europe

“Profit should never take priority over animal health and welfare” stressed Monique Megens, FECAVA senior vice president and member of the joint animal welfare working party of the Union of European Veterinary Practitioners (UEVP) and the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE). Speaking at the general assembly of the UEVP in Tallinn yesterday, she provided an update of actions that had been taken since the publication of the joint position paper on responsible dog trade. She highlighted the need for transport guidelines or legislation for dogs and tackling the problem of false certification and pet passport falsifications.
